Jesus is God
We as Christians believe an amazing truth. Jesus is God. As amazing as this truth is, there is another that is even more amazing: Jesus loves us and wants to be in relationship with us. Jesus left Heaven and came to earth because He wanted us to know Him. No one understands how or why the Creator of the universe would go to such great lengths to know us, but He did. Wanting to know Jesus is the first step to entering into a relationship with Him. God is deeply in love with us, His creation, and He longs to know us.
The Problem
The problem was our sin, our wrongdoing. You see, Jesus came because our sin was keeping us from getting close to God. Most likely you have seen the image of Jesus on a cross. That image represents a real event. Jesus really was killed by being nailed to a cross and His death was in our place. It's tough to understand, but our sin required a death. That death required by my sin and your sin came through Jesus.
Then What Happened?
Three days after His death Jesus came back to life. This is called the resurrection. Then, He went back to Heaven and is there right now.
What About Me?
Even though Jesus isn't walking around here on earth in a human body anymore, we still have the opportunity of having a deep, personal relationship with Him. We can know Him by reading the Bible, which is like a letter written by Him to us. We can also know Him because the Holy Spirit can be with us all the time. Maybe that sounds a little strange, but relating to the Creator of the World is like nothing you have experienced before.
What is a Christian?
When we enter into a relationship with Jesus, people call that becoming a Christian, which literally means being a "little Christ." Having a relationship with Jesus is something that we choose. If you believe that Jesus is God and that He died for your sin and came back to life, then you have taken the first step and you have started a relationship with God.
Follow Christ
If you would like to say a prayer to invite Jesus into your heart as your personal Savior, here is a way you can pray:
"Father, I know that I have not lived as I should. I am beginning to understand that my sins have separated me from you. I want to turn away from my sinful life toward you. Please forgive me. I believe that your son, Jesus Christ, died for my sins. I invite Jesus to become the Lord of my life, to rule and reign in my heart from this day forward. Please send your Holy Spirit to help me obey you, and to do your will for the rest of my life. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen."
